Is there a way to try out the session features without installing the plugin?

As per the title, it's not practical for me to install the plugin on our production JIRA environment. Can I see it in action some other way?

Bonfire is installed on http://sandbox.onjira.com/ - you can create your own account there and play around as much as you like.
