How to add a column to the dashboard

I'm using the Jira standard "favorites dashboard" and I have "Show issue counts" set to Yes.

My question is, how do I create a column immediately to the left of the issue counts column?
I'd like it to show the bugs of the logged in user for all of the projects displayed on the dashboard.

It needs a change in the gadget code, which is some development work.

Rendering is done by javascript whereas the data is served by Java.
