How does a burndown chart based on story points work?

Stephen Toop January 21, 2022

I am running the burndown chart based upon story points. 4 stories have been completed so far and marked as closed but the burndown chart is not reflecting this at all.

My general question - are there certain fields in Jira that have to be completed as mandatory for the burn down chart based upon story points to work or is this a bug or something else entirely?

Hi @Stephen Toop ,

please verify that Resolution field is populated for your closed tickets. Resolution field is mandatory in order to have story points tracked in your burdown chart.

Please, let me know.

Regards,

Fabio

Hi @Fabio Racobaldo _Herzum_ ,

Thanks for responding, very much appreciated. The resolution field is showing as done.

Do you think it is worth ensuring that fix version / affected version and components are all populated too (viewable items without having to edit) just in case one of these is expected?

Hi @Stephen Toop ,

components, affect/fix version has not impact on that report.

Please could you try to reindex your project and check again your burndown?

Moreover, could you add a screenshot of your burndown so I can figure out your issue?

Ciao,

Fabio

Hi @Fabio Racobaldo _Herzum_

Please see a screenshot of the burndown. Let me enquire about the project reindex and how that is done in our organisation. I presume that it is a pretty standard and low risk activity?

Kind regards,

Steve

Hi @Stephen Toop ,

as jira admin you can perform by yourself. Depending from the number of tickets in your project it could impact jira performances.

Btw, there are no other risks.

In order to reindex a project, as a jira admin, you should :

  1. Visit the project
  2. Click on the "Project settings" on the bottom left of the screen.
  3. On "Project settings" page, Click on "Re-index project" option from the left hand side menu.
  4. Click on "Start project re-index" button to perform the project re-indexing.

I think that your issue could be related to indexes.

Another check : Are completed issues in the last column on the right of your board?

The only thing that I observer on the active sprints board is that there is a blocked column to the right of done. Could this be interfering ?

Please @Stephen Toop , could you post a screenshot of your current board highlighting the position of your tickets completed and related story points?

Ciao,

Hi @Stephen Toop ,

please setup your board so the completed tickets are on the last right column. Based on that, if ticket are with resolution not empty, your burdown will be updated.

Let me know if it fixes your issue.

Fabio, you are an absolute superstar ...........

I got one of the existing administrators to grant me temporary admin access and correcting the order has fixed the issue.

Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Kind regards,

Steve
