How do I change issue type schemes for a Service Desk?

Derek Sheeman April 10, 2018

We JIRA Service Desk project configured on a series of issue types that has been running for some time (about 10,000 issues).

We have a business need to change the issue type scheme for the project to an entirely different listing of issue types.

The Problem(s):

  • Changing issue types invalidates all existing Customer Request Types (CRT) and blanks them out on all existing issues.
  • Doing a temporary issue type scheme with both issue types and updating the Customer Request Types via DB edit invalidates all Customer Request Types recorded on the tickets (because their issue types now do not match)
  • Changing the issue type scheme locks out all existing CRT's so they can't be referenced to make copies.

We are looking for a way to change the issue types associated to a Service Desk without "breaking everything".   Has anyone solved this problem?

You may want to consider doing this, change all the issue types first, then use the bulk change function to remap each issue type to request type one by one. You will need to filter our all issues in one project & issue type first in issue navigator, then you will be able to do a bulk change to edit the request type.
