My company's Jira page is located at http://www.companyname.atlassian.net/

When I try to browser to https://companyname.atlassian.net/rest/api/2/project/projectname to view the JSON response for my project ID, I get a 404 not found error. Trying anything with /rest/api/2/ results in 404 not found errors.

Am I doing something wrong? Does my company need to enable the API? I am confused.

No, it's there.  It's more that your browser doesn't like it because it's not logged in.

Try using a curl command to test it - https://developer.atlassian.com/jiradev/jira-apis/jira-rest-apis/jira-rest-api-tutorials/jira-rest-api-version-2-tutorial

It is an 18 month old link, and things have been re-arranged.  However, if you go there and then look at the "security" area to the left, you'll find authorisation docs, including examples.
