Component In Jira

Curious how Components roll up to a Domain in Jira. Are Components and Domains named the same? What's the purpose of creating Components? Is it just to group work? If i dont use Components, within my boards do, i just select a feature that rolls into Jira that then rolls up to a Domain?

Jira components help you to group your work items and have rules to auto-assign people to issues linked to those components.

At the same time Atlassian is rolling out the new Compass Components.. Have you observed it in your project page?
