Can JIRA be used for an operations team for capacity planning?

We do capacity planning for our peak seasonal work in operations and order fulfillment manually. It is time consuming and cumbersome. we use Jira for project management and wondering if there is a way to tap into the capacity planning part of JIRA project management and use it for our capacity planning in operations. Has anyone used JIRA's capacity planning in this way? Can you share how you have used capacity planning in a more advanced manner like I would like to do?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Naomi Casebolt
If you consider using third-party apps, you can try ActivityTimeline. It offers features to help you plan out and schedule the workload for your team.

  • Capacity planning: managers and team members can easily access important data related to their workload and capacity with the multi-functional indicator. The indicator is color-coded to help them become more productive and efficient.

  • Availability: on the Workload indicator you can check resource availability instantly when scheduling the tasks.

  • Cross-team view: plugin delivers wide visualization in order for you to comprehend how to manage your teams more effectively.
  • Planning and org structure view: you can select multiple teams and schedule the tasks between users-teams in one timeline view.
  • Accessibility: you can customize the settings of who can have the access to the system.

If you have any additional questions please feel free to ask me. We can provide a demo session for you if needed. Or read about more features here.
Best, Nataliya

Can you make the capacity with the story points instead of hours?

@Naomi Casebolt If you are just using Jira capacity planning is very difficult.  If you have Advance Roadmaps you can enable capacity planning. https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/enable-capacity-planning-in-advanced-roadmaps/   There are also a large number of apps in the marketplace that provide this functionality.

Thank you. I think for what we need this would still be cumbersome and a third party app might serve us better.

Hi,

As an alternative, if you are ok to consider a mktplace app to help you to plan the capacity for your team members and track them, you can try out the one we have developed for the same use case. You can use hours or story points for planning the capacity and tracking them.

Capacity Planner

The app allows to store the capacity for individual users and save as templates. which can be mapped to a project / fix version to track the allocation and remaining time per user. Do try it out.
