Confusion almost set in, but figured it out. Not very intuitive though.
When peeps here tell you to drag the status into the Kanban Backlog column, they mean literally drag it away from the board's column called Backlog and drop it on left blue/green panel.
And then Ta-daa! Magic.
If you add backlog to any of the columns in the Kanban board other than the first, you lose it from the menu. If you put backlog back in the backlog column of the kanban board in board settings>column management, it will return to your sidenav. Just in case others who have done the same thing are searching for one reason why backlog might disappear from the sidenav.

It seems that you are using a Kanban board instead of a Scrum board.
There is no independent Backlog screen in Kanban. All eligible issues are automatically displayed in Kanban and do not need to be managed by sprint.
