Atlassian Team Hierarchy

I am wondering if there is any way to "group" Atlassian Teams together, in the sense of organizational hierarchy. For example, right now I have Atlassian Teams created for:

Scrum Team A

Scrum Team B

Scrum Team C

Scrum Team D

But it would be useful if I could organize them by Department, or a Parent Team, such as:

Department X

-Scrum Team A

Department Y

-Scrum Team B

-Scrum Team C

-Scrum Team D

Then I could slide and dice issues not only by Team but also by Department. I haven't found anything that makes this possible so if I am missing something or there is a feature request out there for this I'd love to be able to know about it.

Hi @Rebecca Lewis

There’s no way to group groups together like you’re after. Here are some alternatives:

1. Name the team groups to include the department structure; e.g. mkt_sales_staff and mkt_sales_managers, eng_jira_devs, dept_team_A

This obviously will take a lot to maintain, but it’s simple and cheap to implement if your org is small.

2. Create groups of teams and groups of departments. If group scrum_team_b has users 1,2,3 and group scrum_team_c has users 4,5,6. Then group dept_Y has users 1,2,3,4,5,6

This would probably be more work to manually maintain, but it allows you to filter issues based on assignee being in the department group. To do this I’d recommend using automation, either within your IdP or an app like Admin Automations. Just create a rule to add users from the relevant scrum team groups into the department group, and another to remove them if they leave the team group. Then the only effort is to maintain the team group memberships.

I hope that helps.

Hi @Rebecca Lewis ,

This isn't something that's supported (at least as far as I know). I've checked jira.atlassian.com (JAC) but didn't manage to find anything related to this.

On the other hand, if you're using IdP which is connected to your Atlassian org (Atlassian Guard), you might want to check this out: Participate in the SCIM-sync Atlassian Teams Early Access Program (EAP)
Basically, if you would have a hierarchy of teams like you've described within the IdP, then, with this feature you could, potentially, simulate these 'nested teams'.
This is still kinda theoretical, but might be worth a shot.

To get back on that initial part, if nothing, I would recommend reaching out to Atlassian Support with this request/question. They can quickly scan open suggestions and if there isn't one for this, they might open one for you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tom

Thank you Tom. I believe we are currently considering purchasing Atlassian Guard, so I will explore the EAP for sure! I appreciate it!

Hey @Rebecca Lewis

I like your idea and I believe this could be a good feature to provide an organization structure in Jira.

If there is a team, naturally I think people will look for department which contains teams.

I'm not sure if it's in Atlassian's roadmap but I think it's a good idea for them to consider.
