It's possible that the issue filter for the Kanban board is excluding the new status that you've added - this would cause the issues to transition to the new status, but they would disappear from the Kanban board.

Yep, that is indeed the issue. Thank you @Shayne Covey. The underlying filter for the board was missing this new status. It's working now.
