Customize your navigation in Jira business projects!

Hey everyone!

I’m Eric, a Product Manager on the Jira team, and I’m here to share some exciting news for everyone working in business projects (formerly known as Jira Work Management). We’re introducing new capabilities for project admins to tailor the project view navigation to better accommodate your team’s unique needs.

Project admins can now customize the following in their business projects:

  • Set the default view for the project
  • Remove a tab from the project view navigation
  • Add a tab back to the navigation if it has been removed
  • Reorder the tabs

Also, please note that Project settings have been slightly relocated to the top-right corner of the project view.

Any changes that are made to the navigation will be visible for everyone who has access to the project. With this, project admins are empowered to display what’s most important to your team, and hide what’s not.

We are gradually rolling out this update and it will be available to all customers within the next week (except bundled release track customers). This change will only apply to business projects for now - stay tuned for further updates on bringing customized navigation across to software projects.

We’re excited to know how you’ll be customizing your tabs with these new capabilities. Please let us know in the comments!

Hi @Eric Zheng  - When you say that "default view for the project" can be set, what does that mean specifically? Does that mean that the project admin can set a global set of columns now for the List screen? Or does it just mean that the global list of menu options across the top are set for everyone?  Thanks for this!

Hey @John Funk ! The "default view" in this context refers to the primary screen that users will land on when navigating to a project. Previously, the Board view was the fixed default for every project, but with this change, project admins can change this to either the Summary, List, Board, Timeline, or Calendar views. This is saved at a project-level and is effective for all users landing in that project.

Hey team
I’m currently working on resolving an issue: whenever I receive a support ticket on my Service Project board, an automated clone of the ticket is created in a specific Jira project for developers. This results in having two tickets for the same issue.
Is there a way to automate the linking between the ISD (support ticket) and the corresponding story for developers on the Jira board, ensuring that all updates and status changes are shared automatically between them?

Thank you for any updates!

@Alex Shevchenko

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

You added your post as a Comment on an article about changes to Jira Work Management project navigation, but the content of your comment is actually a how-to question for Jira. This was not the right place to post your question.

Please create a new Question in the Jira Questions forum to get assistance with your problem.

Is it possible to add a custom tab? for example from an app installed in the apps tab?

Rather than changing these new customisation settings per each project,  will there be (or are there)  any global (system wide, that is) settings that set the defaults for all projects in a JIRA instance ?

This is a great feature! I'm very happy to use it! It would be much more nicer when I can set these tabs globally or on my template project where I share settings with.

@Pasquale Laviano : It's not possible to add Apps as its own tab right now, but this is something we're looking into. Stay tuned for further updates soon.

@Muharrem Bilgin : We haven't considered global configuration of default nav settings for all projects yet, could you share more detail about what you'd be customizing, and for how many projects in your instance?

@Juergen Holzer : Thanks for the feedback!

Hi @Eric Zheng

it would be nice to have an API to customize those projects (remove tabs, set background color)

Best regards

David

Very good adjustment, as with other comments; would be ideal to have global settings rather than cleaning up each project individually.

Ability to customise views/tabs and add more grouping options such as parent. Would help with planning and cutting the work in different ways, flipping between different list/board layouts in different contexts etc
