Hope you are well. You can build a simple rule like this: 

• Trigger: When the value changes for the user picker (Approvers in Screenshot),
• Add action "Manage watchers" > Add watchers: add smart value {{Customfield_XXXXX}}. Replace XXXXX with your custom field ID. 

You can find custom field IDs like this: 

Custom fields > Edit Custom field
