I want to allow users to edit the resolution but if they select 'Edit' and aren't messing with the resolution field, it changes it.
Is there a way to make it so it's default what it actually is on the ticket when you select 'edit'?
Ah, no, it's not quite possible.
If you put the resolution field on a screen, then it will hold whatever value that it is set to.
BUT, if the issue is currently unresolved, it will jump to the DEFAULT resolution.
The assumption Atlassian is making here is that if the resolution is on a screen, then that screen is for resolving/closing the issue and the resolution must be set.
What you actually need to do is remove the field from the edit screens and only use it on screens that are used by transitions that end in a status that you want to consider as "resolved/done/ended/finished".
You need to have a separate edit screen which will not contain the resolution field on it .
This can be configured from the Screen scheme . Assoaciate a new screen with the edit operation

I want people to be able to edit the field. But if they select the edit button, Resolution has to be on that screen (so they could edit it).
Lets say the resolution is 'unresolved'. They want to change something and select the 'Edit' button. They change what they wanted to but since resolution was on that screen and is default 'fixed/done' it changes the Resolution without the user even noticing.

Do you want the resolution field to be read-only while users edit the issue ?
