Convert issue type of subtask to task under the same story issue

We have created a series of issues using the child feature for a Story in next-gen.   We realize that the child issues were all created as subtasks and we want to change them all to task types of Issues.    Bulk edit and move issue do not allow this to happen nor can we click on the subtask in the key and be shown a task issue type as being available.

How do we perform this conversion or change from subtask to task issue type and keep in the existing issue of story?

Hi @Derek Small

Sub-tasks are children of a task or story.  Tasks are at the same level as story, so you cannot move a task under a story.

If you have a sub-task that you want convert to a task, you can:

  • Change your board view to make sub-tasks visible with Group By
  • Select the sub-task you want to convert
  • Under the ... menu at the right side, select Move
  • Change the type from sub-task to task
  • Select Next > Next > Confirm to make the change
  • Acknowledge when done

If the sub-task was not yet in progress, it will be moved to your backlog.

Best regards,

Bill

This does assume that you have "task" as a story-level issue type.

You could add an issue type of "task" and set it as a sub-task, that would enable you you to change sub-tasks to tasks without moving them out of the issue of which they are currently a part.

Thanks Bill for the response.   I didn't realize that Tasks and Stories were at the same level and thus cannot have a Story -> Task -> Sub-Task hierarchy    It would be nice to be able to move a Task to another story without having to convert it to a sub-task if I understand correctly.

I appreciate your timely response and the knowledge imparted,

Cheers
