We want to create a hierarchy of multi level Issues with each Epic can have multiple stories, each stories can have multiple Tasks and each Task can have multiple subtasks. I can see only two levels. Can anyone help !

1. Epic

2. Stories

3. Tasks

4. Sub Tasks

No, you cannot create a custom hierarchy below the epic level, but you could work around it by using issue links instead of the parent field to link tasks to stories. The enhanced hierarchy can only be added above the epic level, something like this:

Hi @Nayeemuddin Khan

as already suggested by Mikael, you either want to move to Jira Premium and reconsider your hierarchy (so that any additional levels are above Epic), or if this is not an option, use issue links.

The problem with issue links is that Jira doesn't really recognise them as parent/child relationships, and therefore doesn't give you a lot of relevant features.

This being said, if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, there are apps available that can help with this. E.g., my team and I work on an app named JXL for Jira in which issue-link-based hierarchies are well supported. This is how it looks in action:

custom-hierarchy.gif

For context, JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a range of advanced features, including support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

Custom issue hierarchies can be created based on Jira's built-in parent/child relationships (like Epic/Story), and/or based on issue links of configurable issue link types. In the above clip, tasks are connect to stories using issue links of type is parent of / is child of.

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes

Hi @Nayeemuddin Khan

You can't do this within Jira.

This would require an app like stricture where you are able to create your hierarchy in each structure you want to build.

Example from app documentation:

Hi @Nayeemuddin Khan

You can use Issue Links to create your own hierarchy. However you would need a custom solution to view the same. If you would like to try out a mktplace app for your requirement, please take a look at an add-one have developed for the same use case.

Issue Hierarchy

The app rolls up the time spent / story points progress at each parent level. You can add it as a dashboard gadget and export the data to a csv too.
