Can we attach files, e.g. Excel or Word document to an issue in Jira Core?

I have read in the JIRA documentation that JIRA Core allows attachments of files in the issue but the file formats mentioned are for images, i.e. GIF, JPG, PNG. 

I am wondering if we can attach other documents, e.g. Word or Excel?

I never heard of a file type restriction, I think, you can attach any file type.
