I am considering using Service Desk for my IT service desk needs.
I am presently using CA Nimsoft cloud service. and would consider bringing over my customers and all open tickets to Atlassian Service Desk - what is the best way to do this?

can you please point me in the direction of how to load CSV and what format the data needs to be in. is there a knowledge article on this. is the Csv import only accessible from the CLI ? how do i get access to the cli ?
You'd probably import the data into JIRA using the CSV format and setup the Service Desks as needed. You'll then get your users to create Service Desk accounts using the same username as in your previous application.
And that should be it.
