meaning of "Ownership group" and "Ownership type" in Jira Assets

Maël Pégny July 3, 2024

Hi everyone,

Could anyone clarify the meaning of "Ownership group" and "Ownership type" in Jira Assets?

A brief textual definition followed by a couple examples for clarification would be much appreciated.

I am familiar with the ISO norm Category of "Owner" for assets, which is meant to describe the person or department who owns the asset, and I am just wondering what the difference is here in Jira Assets terminology.
Thank you very much for your help,

Maël

I think it gets confusing because Jira mixes IT Assets and CMDB into one record so I wouldn't focus too much on out of the box fields unless you have a need for them. You will also get better adoption if the names of the fields are familiar and fit your existing company culture.

Seems like ownership type is for values like BYOD, Company Owned, and maybe something like Leased could be a potential value.

My interpretation of Ownership group could be for compliance, who is accountable for the asset / CI? which could potentially be different than Support Group which is why they have it separated.

We also added a field that's linked to our user objects of "Current User" which is for who is the assigned user to that asset/CI

But I would try to minimize the amount of fields that are manually managed stick to what is needed for your workflows and compliance requirements. We deleted or renamed most of the fields in our setup
