enable rich text formatting

Anna Wessels May 2, 2024

Hi,

On certain custom fields we would like to enable rich text instead of plain text, where can I find to change this? I may have overlooked when scanning the project settings...

Thanks in advance!

Hi Anna:

Great question, this is what you need to do -

1) You must have site (Jira admin rights).

2) Access the project that you want to enable the specific custom field (used in the project)  you want enabled RTF.  NOTE - This only works for fields associated with Single Line of Text or Paragraph "multi-line texts" data type.  B default, the default "text render" is always applied to custom fields associated with the above data type at creation time.

3) Via project settings >> Fields - To access the project's Fields Configuration Scheme and click on the pen icon located upper right to enable edit mode.

4) In the scheme UI, identify the custom field you want and click on the "Renderers" option.

5) In the field UI, change the Active Renderer from "Default Text Renderer" to "Wiki Style Renderer" and click on the Update button to complete the change.

Hi @Anna Wessels

Welcome to the community!

To enable rich text formatting for certain custom fields in Jira you need to have JIRA admin rights and you can follow these steps:

1. Log in to your Jira instance as an administrator.
2. Go to Jira administration by clicking on the gear icon in the top-right corner and selecting "Jira settings" from the dropdown menu.
3. In the Jira administration page, locate the "Issues" section and click on "Custom fields" to access the custom fields management page.
4. Find the custom field for which you want to enable rich text formatting and click on the three-dot menu icon next to it.
5. Select "Configure" from the dropdown menu to access the configuration settings for the custom field.
6. In the custom field configuration page, scroll down to the "Field Configuration" section.
7. Click on the "Renderers" link under the "Field Configuration" section.
8. In the "Renderers" page, find the custom field and click on the "Configure" link next to it.
9. In the configuration settings for the custom field renderer, select "Wiki Style Renderer" to enable rich text formatting.
10. Save the changes.

Once you have enabled the Wiki Style Renderer for the custom field, users will be able to use rich text formatting options such as bold, italics, bullet points, links, and more when entering data in that field.

One correction to you recommendation, one will need to access the Field Configurations to edit the specific "Field Configuration" and then be able to access the specific custom fields to change the renderer setup.  It is not via the "Custom fields" option.
