Users in Group do not appear in customers list

I have a Group that has been assigned the Service Desk Customers role. When I change the customer permissions from Customers who have an account on this Jira site to Customers who are added to the project - I can no longer find the users in Customers. The users within the group also do not appear in Request Participant fields or other user fields. 

If i add a user directly and assign them the Service Desk Customers role I can then see them in Customers and they appear in the Request Participant field. 

Why would the users in the Group not be searchable after changing the project permissions to 'Customers who are added to the project'?
