Populate a value of a form field into a Jira field.

Tom Porto August 15, 2024

Hi community!

  1. I created a custom Jira field > short text (plain text only) called L2S Request Type.
  2. I created a Form containing a Support Request Type field.
  3. User selects Support Request Type value from dropdown list
  4. Field value user selects triggers Show section (conditionally) to display the applicable form Section.
  5. I want to automatically populate the L2S Request Type field with the value the user selects in 3. above.
  6. When I attempt to link Support Request Type field (2. above) to the L2S Request Type field (1. above)., I receive a Change form field type to match Jira field message.
  7. If I click the message's Change field type button, the Support Request Type Field (2. above) get replaced by the L2S Request Type field and the Show selection (conditionally) (4. above) gets broken.
  8. If I create a customer Jira field > Select List (single choice) instead of short text (plain text only) as described in 1. above, and I populate the Select List (single choice) with values that match the Support Request Type field values, I get the same experience in 7. above.

How can I automatically populate the L2S Request field value (1. above ) with the Support Request Type value the user selects in 3. above?

Video illustration.

Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @Tom Porto ,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!!

You can not link a field with a different type of field. So, you need to create the Jira field as a select list single type, link it on the form with the L2S Request, and update the section field value.
Generally, we create the fields with the same name and values as it is available on the form.

Thanks @Manoj Gangwar for the quick response!

I was afraid that would be the case. Thanks for confirming!

Additional clarification:

  1. I had set up the Support Request Type form field values to trigger certain form sections to show (I.e., Section > Show section = Conditionally).
    1. Setting up the trigger is the reason why I created the Support Request Type form field as type = Dropdown.
      1. The form doesn't seem to offer a field type of Select List (single choice)
  2. I think I previously tried try creating the Jira field as field type Select List (single choice)
    1. When I linked it to the Support Request Type field, it cleared the trigger (1. above) I had set up.
      1. Is the form field type of Dropdown considered the same as the Jira field type of Select List (single choice)?

Yes

Once you linked the field after that you need to check the sections again select the field values then it will work

Checking the selections again against the field values was the piece I was missing before. All set now! Thank you @Manoj Gangwar

Hi Tom,

You may link a Forms field with a Jira field, you will see the following option when you click a field on your Forms:

However, unfortunately the system Request Type field is not supported here, as the value of this field would have been chosen in the steps before the customers fill in the forms, either manually or by attaching the Forms to a Request Form.

Thank you @Nadhila Savira
Yes, I think I tried using the system Request Type field (before I knew about mapped fields needing to be the same type thanks to Manoj) and decided it's better I create a customer Jira field. -Thank you!
