How to add new created issues directly to the backlog

Welske, Melanie February 28, 2024

Hi everyone,

I am new to Jira boards and I have the issue, that I created a backlog but if people create new issues then it will go directly to the board and not the backlog. I tried to find a way to change it but couldn't really find anything regarding this matter.

Hi @Welske, Melanie

What is the workflow you are using on the project and what is the initial status, is this status mapped to the backlog column of your board.

I expect you are using a Kanban setup and a company managed project?

Can you share screenshots, this will help a lot

Hi @Marc - Devoteam

I think the project is a team managed project and a kanban setup but I am not 100% sure about that to be honest.

I want the new created issues to go straight to the separate backlog I enabled but if I create a test issue it is going to to do by default and not the backlog Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 11.47.00.png

this is the workflow:

Hi @Welske, Melanie

You are using a team managed scrum project.

Can you share a screenshot of the backlog?

Hi @Welske, Melanie

So your new issues are on the backlog in status "To Do" (zu erledigen).

So all is correct, Backlog is not a Status.

Workflow statuses are linked to columns in a board and by default the first status in a workflow is linked to the Backlog in a scrum project.

I see there is also a sprint made called "Board" and there are 38 issues in the sprint, these will show on the Board.

Issues in the backlog will not show on the board, only if you move them to the "Board" sprint and the sprint is still active.

Welcome to the community @Welske, Melanie !

Are you referring to other Jira products, since Jira Service Management doesn't have a backlog?

If this is the case, you can create a Jira Software project that will either have the Scrum or Kanban boards, here is the difference:

  • For Kanban board you need to have a status Backlog inserted into the Kanban Backlog column which is reached by the board configuration, when you create an issue it will not be visible and this is because it will be in the Kanban backlog
  • For a Scrum board, backlog is in there automatically since it follows the Scrum framework (you need to move the issues from backlog to the sprint and start the sprint in order for the issues to be visible on the board)
