Are service requests the only available issue types that can be used by external customer service teams?
Welcome to the community. Take a look at the following documentation on all the default issue types assoicated with a JSM project - "just look under the Jira Service Management (service projects) issue types section"

In addition, a typical ITSM project type will have the following issue types by default when it is provisioned. Of course, project admin/site admin can further customize the issue types configuration as needed.
Keep in mind, one will then create request types associated to those issue types to expose the request types in the portal UI. The issue type is not exposed to the users from the portal UI because they only interact with the project via the request types that you setup.
