Hello,
We are currently demoing JSM as an incident management tool for our NOC. The NOC will focus on monitoring Networking Equipment (Routers/Switches/Voice/Wireless etc). One topic that has been brought up several times is how we will handle maintenance windows. We have several monitoring tools that all send different alerts. Those programs have the ability to pause alerts but it will be best for us to handle this from a centralized location. Currently, we are using Splunk to pause alerts for specific devices (this will go away in the near future.) The pausing works by selecting hostnames of devices you want to disregard alerts for during a specified time.
From what I can tell, we would not be able to create a maintenance window that pauses alerts for a specific Asset Object. We technically have 1000's of devices that are monitored. Depending on the work being performed we may need to pause monitoring on 10 devices at a site that has 300+ devices for a 3 hour window due to patching/upgrading etc. We don't want to pause monitoring for the whole site since we want to receive alerts if devices outside of the maintenance scope happen to have an issue at the same time. I believe I could accomplish this with Custom created policies for each Network Device but this isn't practical and wouldn't be maintained (unless automated).
Does anyone have any ideas surrounding this subject? It's clearly something that Atlassian could implement and seems like it would be a benefit to many. I may be missing something but the maintenance plan options seems pretty cut and dry.
Excited to see what the community has to say!
Unfortunately, you have the correct approach through the policies and maintenance windows configuration, which would be a nightmare to configure and maintain.
A suggestion would be to create all the policies via rest APIs. Then trigger the maintenance creation via a rest api call when a JSM change ticket is tagged with the specific asset/s when is transitioned to "In progress". This way you can get some sort of automation working for you.
Regards,
Fabian
Fabian,
Thanks for the reply. I see an easy opportunity for Atlassian to integrate a feature or function based off of Assets.
Best,
Josh
