Column Spacing In Assets Seems Inconsistent

Hi there,
Is there way to make some columns display narrower in Assets.  I have about 12 columns to show for some assets (Name, Model, Serial Number, Owner, Manufacturer, Purchase Date, State and some others).  

State is a status field that contains DEPLOYED or STOCK.  The issue is to the right of it is actually more white space that the values actually take up.  I can't seem to condense that down in any sort of way.  Is it taking the widest possible value of all status in the system and assumes that to be the column size or is there a way to force that to be a tad narrower.

I have noticed this with other columns but this one seems to jump out the most at the moment.

I am seeing the same thing in my environment.  It seems like each column has a predetermined width and you cannot change it.  Even when a column has a single character the column is much wider than it needs to be.  I am interested to see if there is a fix for this as well.
