Adding Workflow Statuses

If i add a couple workflow statuses to a service project, how does it impact existing issues in the project?  Are there any downsides to doing this?

It will have no affect on existing requests. The only time changing the workflow would have any affects on existing requests would be if you removed statuses, changed conditions and/or validators.

I agreed with what @Mikael Sandberg stated.  When new statuses are added to an existing WF, the new statuses go into effect/available from that point going forward (after you published the changes).  All existing issues will not be impacted unless if you are deleting an existing status of your WF, where the system will not allowing you to remove it if there are issues at the status in question when you try to publish the same WF live for example.
