How to Edit a Locked Field

Rakesh Gokuldas February 27, 2023

Hi Team,

I can see a lot of fields are locked, and I cannot edit the area. The current use case is straightforward. The board admin wants to add a new quick filter column for the team-managed board. But unfortunately, Jira is not providing any option for that. But simultaneously, the existing file (locked one) cannot make any changes.

What a tricky situation...........

Hi @Rakesh Gokuldas , locked fields are default/system Jira fields and they cannot be edited. Can you explain what you mean by adding a new quick filter column? Maybe a marked up screenshot? Looking at one of my TMP projects...

Not this one. Below is the attached quick field I am talking about. The locked one has no option to modify, but the created custom field cannot add to the quick filter. Screenshot 2023-03-01 at 7.53.44 AM.png

You cannot edit that filter feature. However you can create Custom filters under Project settings > Board > Custom filters. You should be able to achieve whatever you want via that method.

Thanks for the reply, Jack. Can you please help me understand why I am not getting the options in this project? Usually, I'll be able to see the options under Project settings > Board > Custom filters—Attached is the Screenshot 2023-03-01 at 4.36.48 PM.pngimage for your reference.

Ahhhh....you are using a TMP "Business project". I was looking at a software project. The variations in project templates can be frustrating, especially for admins. 😣

I will have to create one of those projects and play with it but expect if you are not seeing it then may not yet be available.

Actually, this is just a Business project I think. If you look in lower left corner can you confirm if team or company managed project? Regardless the availability of Custom filters is not as I i indicated under project settings for Business (Jira Work Management).

It is mentioned as ''team managed project''. I have attached the image for your reference.Screenshot 2023-03-01 at 5.34.11 PM.png

Thanks for that. I guess I need to create a TMP JWM project and play with it a bit. That project type isn't currently in my repertoire. Regardless, I'm confident in saying that you are limited in the area of filters as you have noted here. You cannot edit the "Filter" options in the drop-down. However, I'm pretty confident in stating that custom filters will ultimately come to TMP JWM projects at some point.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Locked fields are locked to prevent us making mistakes like mis-configuring them.  The lock does not stop you creating or amending content in them in issues, and it has nothing to do with filtering (the lock actually prevents you from removing the ability to search on them)

So I am very lost on what your question actually is.

What are you trying to do?   Create a quick filter based on a (locked) field?  Re-configure your columns?  What is the "file" you mention?

Rakesh Gokuldas February 28, 2023

I understood about the locked field. But what I am trying to accomplish here is very simple. The attached TM board below has an option ''quick filter'', which only shows very few default fields. The locked field(Category) only has one drop-down to select, and the team wants to add more. For that, I created a new field and added multiple options. But my problem here is I cannot add this new custom field to the quick filter. I hope you got my point. Screenshot 2023-03-01 at 7.53.44 AM.png

So it's nothing to do with locked fields.

You are trying to create a filter based on a custom field?

Is this project a team-managed Jira work management project?  These don't have configurable quick-filters beyond the basic system fields yet.

Rakesh Gokuldas March 1, 2023

It's a pure team-managed board, Nic. Okay, so in this case, I won't be able to add the custom filed to this filter.
