JA using product instead of Program

Tess Doris June 12, 2023

Hello, does anyone have experience setting up JA using the product instead or program? I have done this a couple of times and in one case we had great success and the new one is more of challenge as they are matrix and assign the work to the team, vs having the team assigned to the product. Has anyone else come across this? What are the challenges?

I guess I would need to better understand what you mean by "product instead of program".

In my mind, you can have both in Jira Align.  In addition to the Portfolio, Program, Team structure, you can define the Products that your teams work on. Products are also hierarchical, so you can assign each Feature to a single product or function within a product.

Additionally, Jira Align supports up to five additional crosscutting "custom" hierarchies.  The main benefit of using custom hierarchies is that a Feature can be indicated to contribute to multiple "products".

Yes, we don't want to use the product feature, have you read the book "From Project to Product".  The ideas is we structure the program as a product and assign the teams to the product, or in this case we use matrix teams.
