Server to data center migration (Decouple Jira Software)

Mahesh Kallepalli August 4, 2021

Hello ,

Currently we are using Jira Software & Jira Service Management server. We want to migrate to Jira datacenter standalone.

We are planning to purchase a data center license and copy it into the existing server. Is this the right approach any complications will occur in this process?

As we are not using Jira software want to separate from this instance. Thinking to remove the license from applications (admin console) alternatively back end do we need to made any changes.

I highly appreciate if any one can suggest your inputs on this migration.

Regards,

Mahesh

Hi @Mahesh Kallepalli , I'm wondering if this question accidentally got posted twice as I saw another just like this come through, and Nic has already answered that one .

In short, yes, you've outlined the correct approach. In recent Jira Software and Jira Service Management versions, simply switching to a Data Center license will convert the server to a Data Center instance. The licenses for all the products have to match what the instance is - in other words, you can't mix Server and Data Center licenses on the same instance.

So as you've noted, if you are only planning to use Jira Service Management Data Center, then removing the Jira Software (Server) license will be necessary.

Cheers,

@Daniel Eads

Thanks for your response..!!

Sorry for that accidentally it is posted from other account. I just saw Nic response.

Currently we are using Jira 8.5.0 version after migration it comes under single node Dc.

In future do we get any risk in case if we want to run Jira on multiple nodes.

Mahesh

@Daniel Eads  Kindly confirm is there any version compatibility for copying license from server to data center.

The licenses are based on user count, not number of nodes - so you'll be all set adding more nodes in the future! For your reference, here is the documentation for adding a new node to the cluster.

For the Jira Service Management application itself, you don't need to upgrade (since you are already on Jira 8.5, which supports easily converting to single-node data center). Any Marketplace apps you have installed might need to be re-licensed, depending on their availability with Data Center. You can use the Manage apps page to check on these apps - if you've already started Jira as single-node Data Center, the apps will have license/data center information listed on the Manage apps page. More information about the various statuses they can have is available on Upgrading server apps when you migrate to Data Center .

@Daniel Eads

Thanks for clarification regarding my concerns.

Hope this would be a final question we can do staging migration with data center evaluation licenses for Jira Service Management and apps right initially.

Wii procure Jira Service Management and apps commercial license for production instance.

Yes, you can do a migration test with evaluation licenses if you like. The evaluations are good for 30 days, and the application will go into a read-only mode once the evaluation term has ended.

@Daniel Eads

Sounds good. Does this migration will create any impact on Atlassian application integrations such as confluence and bitbucket.

There won't be impact on integrations, so long as the base URL remains the same. This is how some of the application links work - if the base URL changes, then you may need to re-link the application. But for a straight migration by dropping in a Data Center license to the existing production application, there won't be any effect on application links.
