You can turn it off in the "add on management" section.  I can't remember the add-on and module you need to disable, but it's there somewhere (check with your users too - when I did it, there was a lot of negative feedback and it was quickly re-enabled)

Hi Jug,

Nic is correct. Just go to the Add ons UI in confluence and locate the system add on "Confluence previews". If you disable this add on, you will disable the file preview in Confluence.

Cheers,

Rodrigo

Just a warning - disabling the preview feature for attachments (as described here - https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Is-there-a-way-to-turn-off-the-quot-preview-quot-feature-and/qaq-p/201649) has pros and cons:

  • Pro: The preview of MS Word and PowerPoint files is disabled, so these documents will be downloaded in 1 click instead of multiple clicks.  The users of my company's Confluence instance regularly complain about the MS Word and PowerPoint preview functionality since it often leaves out certain text and images, and the text is often garbled.  90%+ of the time users simply want to download these docs and view them in the native tool such as Word or PowerPoint.  Disabling file previews allows them to download in a single click rather than clicking once to preview, then clicking the download button to download.
  • Con: Clicking on an image will no longer cause it to blow up to full size.  If your Confluence users sometimes include images that are difficult to read when viewing the page, and must be clicked to view them larger in order to be useful, then disabling file preview could become a big issue.

There's an open feature request in the Confluence backlog to allow disabling of file previews for specific file types - CONFSERVER-36899.  It is still open as of today :-(
