My automation is to "Send an email with an AI-generated summary and action items when a meeting notes page is published."
Unfortunately, the action item section is always blank. None of the following prompts have worked:
It's probably how I format the email, but I can't determine where the error is.
Hi @vsim , welcome to the Community!
Based on the announcement blog here, what you're doing with the first option seems to be correct. Are you able to share the screenshots of your full automation rule, that might be useful in identifying what's gone wrong.

Here is the screenshot. I'm clearly a Confluence noob and appreciate any and all help.

Hey @vsim ,
I was able to get this working in my test instance.
First, if you want to use the "Generate AI Action Items" Action step in the automation, you will want to pass the "{{page}}" smart value into the action itself. Afterwards, you can then reference it with the (case sensitive, I presume) following smart value: "{{generatedAIActionItems}}"
Here's a screenshot of what I mean:
which results in the following email
I suspect you've got the right idea, but just need to capitalize the "AI" in your smart values. Give that a go, and let me know if it helps.

Good news, I see exactly the above. TY!
Bad news: I have action items on the page via "/action item," but nothing populates the email.

I just ran a test myself and I'm seeing some strange behaviour as well.
It seems the first method of generating action items, by using the {{page.AIActionItems}} correctly returns action items in the email summary, but the "Generated AI Action Items" automation rule action does not.
Here's the email I received, and the source Confluence page.
In this case, give the {{page.AIActionItems}} smart value a try, and see if that works. Otherwise, we may need to open a support ticket with Atlassian directly to get them to see what's going on.

Thank you for trying to help. I'll submit a ticket. I've noticed that trying to use the "Action items panel (Beta)" on my page also fails to generate action items. However, "Find action items" works.
