What combining Jira Core with Jira Software means for your Data Center to Cloud migration

This pre-flight check workflow is outdated as of October 7, 2024. Learn about the updated workflow in our latest blog.

Hello Atlassian Community!

At our premier event, Team '24 this past April, we announced an exciting update: Jira Core has been combined with Jira Software Cloud to create a unified Jira Cloud product. This merge simplifies operations by:

  • centralizing user management under a single Jira Cloud product.

  • introducing flexible project configuration features.

For further details on this announcement and other updates from Team '24, please visit our blog.

Since this announcement was made in April, we are no longer provisioning licenses for Jira Core (previously available as a Server/Data Center product). For more information on how this merger impacts Jira Work Management, please refer to this support page.

What does this mean for my migration?

Beginning your migration before November 1, 2024

If you're planning to start your migration before November 1, 2024, here's what you need to know:

  1. Pre-migration checks: When you use Atlassian’s Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (JCMA) to transfer your data from your self-managed environment to cloud, the tool will run pre-migration checks to ensure everything is set up correctly.

  2. Jira Work Management requirement: If your cloud site doesn’t currently have Jira Work Management, you'll be prompted to add it during these checks.

  3. How to add Jira Work Management: Simply select "Add now" when prompted. This will take you to admin.atlassian.com, where you can set up a Jira Work Management instance. This step is necessary to proceed with your migration.

warning Customers using JCMA versions older than 1.11.7 may encounter issues when attempting to provision a Jira Work Management instance using the "Add now" option. If you are experiencing this problem, please reach out to our support team.

Beginning your migration on or after November 1, 2024

For those starting the migration process on or after November 1, 2024, the following will apply:

  1. Migrating Jira Core data: You can use JCMA to migrate Jira Core data directly to Jira Cloud for a streamlined migration. However, access to this capability depends on the version of JCMA you’re using. To avoid issues and ensure a seamless process, please update to the latest version of JCMA.

  2. Pre-Migration checks: JCMA will perform pre-migration checks and show Jira Work Management as “available on your cloud site.” This confirmation means you can proceed with your migration. If Jira Work Management is displayed as “not available,” you won’t be able to provision a Jira Work Management instance through this migration flow. If you encounter this issue, please contact our support team for assistance.
