6 ways we made Atlassian's Cloud migration tooling better in 2021

If you haven't already heard, it's Migrations Month (for just a few more days!) in the Atlassian Community. But we've been building Cloud migration momentum for the past few years and 2021 was no exception.

Last year, we ran six early access programs focused on Atlassian's Cloud migration tooling. And as of the end of the year, all of these early access features have officially launched and are available to all customers.

We now support free migration tooling for all Atlassian Server and Data Center products: the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (which now migrates Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Advanced Roadmap data), the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant, and the Bitbucket Cloud Migration Assistant.

Cloud Migration Capabilities to Know About

Here are 6 capabilities we shipped last year that make Cloud migrations easier:

  1. Cloud-to-cloud migration for Jira is now available natively in Jira Cloud. This feature will enable consolidation within Jira that wasn’t possible before and will allow teams to collaborate more easily. It will also give Atlassian admins more control over how their Jira Cloud sites are set up
  2. Bitbucket Cloud Migration Assistant is now available for download in the Atlassian Marketplace. The free, Atlassian-supported app automatically migrates projects, repositories, pull request diffs and metadata, and users to Bitbucket Cloud. Watch the demo.
  3. Jira Service Management migrations are now supported in the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant, meaning you can automatically migrate Jira Service Management projects, users, groups, and customers to Cloud.
  4. Automated app migrations are now supported for select Jira apps using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.
  5. Automated app migrations are now supported for select Confluence apps using the Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant.
  6. Advanced Roadmap migrations are now supported in the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant, meaning you can automatically migrate Advanced Roadmap plans, projects, users, and groups using the tool.

The Next Phase in App Migrations

For app migrations, we’ve partnered with more than 25 top Marketplace Partners to enable automated app data migration for 70+ Marketplace apps. Today, customer favorites like Questions for ConfluenceJSU Automation Suite for Jira Workflows, Viewtracker Analytics for ConfluenceMarkdown Macro for Confluence, and Create on Transition already support automated app data migration. We are continuing to work with Marketplace Partners to bring even more automated app migration paths to you. See here for the full list of development in progress.

How to Get Started

These migration features have all launched in either Public Beta or GA, which means they are available by default in the Marketplace versions of the Bitbucket Cloud Migration AssistantJira Cloud Migration Assistant, and Confluence Cloud Migration Assistant. Cloud-to-cloud migration for Jira is available natively in Jira Cloud.

@Elizabeth Howden Thanks for sharing this clear and concise summary of the Atlassian Cloud migration tools and capabilities available today for migrating from server to cloud or cloud to cloud. This is going to be super helpful for any new users looking for guidance on how to get started with the tools for their Cloud Migration Journey.

The Cloud to Cloud migration will be incredibly useful, I'm excited to try it out sometime in the future!
