Hello,

I would like to ask what is the recommended way for a company to back up all the data stored in Trello. I'm referring to everything including boards, cards, card content (descriptions, comments, attachments), and any other related data.

The reason I ask is because many people have access, and there is always a risk that something may be accidentally deleted — even content inside a card. We would like to ensure that we maintain secure backups of all our information.

Please inform us about the available options or best practices to keep our data safe.

Thank you in advance.

Hello, Vasilis

I understand you'd like to create your own backups of Trello, so let's evaluate all the available options for you!

Just to let you know, we back up all the information on our servers every hour, although this information is not user-facing. We will restore this backup if something happens to your data on our end - but that doesn't apply for accidental scenarios, such as deleting a board/card by mistake.

As for personal backups, we’re definitely pro-data-portability and want to make sure our users can access and export their data. However, to clarify, it's not currently possible to re-import a manually exported board back into Trello.

If you're interested in a third-party solution, there is the Backups for Trello Power-Up, which you can check out here: https://trello.com/power-ups/5f68db5b510db84238769710

For a more native option, Trello has an export feature, available under the Board Menu > Print, Export & Share. The format is JSON, which lends itself well to technical usages, but doesn't load into common programs like Excel.

Alternatively, you have a Premium Workspace, you can export board data as a CSV directly from Trello. That can be opened in any desktop spreadsheet program.

Neither export option can be reimported into Trello, so they are primarily for people looking to crunch the data with programs of their own or just to back up their data in case of an emergency.

Please let me know if this raises any more questions.

kind Regards
Alisson
