Hi! We are using Trello in our team. My colleague (who is not a gold member) is not able to change his notification settings. When he is clicking on his avatar in the top right corner no drop down menu is showing. 
He is also not able to upload any attachments in the cards, maybe these 2 things have something to do with each other. Very much looking forward to your answer

Welcome to the Community!

Could I just check that your colleague has confirmed his account? He should have received an email with a confirmation link/button on it. If he hasn't then this may be causing the problem.

Additionally, what role has he been added to the board as?
