Why does Trello create 2 cards when I forward an email to the board?

Whenever I forward an email to board 2 cards are created. I don't have any add ons and I just forward e-mail to the address given on the E-mail to board option.

Hi @Cheryl Huggin,

Instead of forwarding, you can try composing a brand new email directly to the Trello board address. If only one card is created, the issue is specific to how your email client handles forwarding (likely the HTML/plain text duplication).

Many email clients send emails in both HTML and plain text formats simultaneously (known as multipart/alternative). Trello's email-to-board feature can sometimes interpret these as two separate emails, creating two cards: one from the HTML version and one from the plain-text version.

To test this, try changing your email client's compose format to plain text only before forwarding:

  • In Gmail: Compose → click the three dots at the bottom → select Plain text mode

  • In Outlook: Options → Format → select Plain Text

If this stops the duplication, then the multipart format was the cause.

You can also try resetting your email-to-board address to see if that fixes the problem.

If the issue persists, I'd recommend raising a support ticket to Atlassian Support so the team can investigate your specific email setup.

Hope this helps 🙌
Liam
