I’m planning to migrate from a self-hosted/on-premise setup to Trello Cloud, and I’d appreciate guidance from anyone who has experience with this.

Current setup:

  • Hosting type: Server / Self-hosted
  • Number of users: (approx.)
  • Number of boards: (approx.)
  • Power-Ups in use: (list important ones)

Goals:

  • Migrate all boards, lists, cards, attachments, and activity history
  • Ensure minimal downtime during migration
  • Maintain team structure and permissions
  • Reconfigure or replace Power-Ups if needed

Questions:

  1. What is the best way to migrate Trello data to Cloud?
  2. Are there any official tools or recommended methods for migration?
  3. How can I handle Power-Ups during migration?
  4. What are common issues or data loss risks?
  5. Any tips to reduce downtime or ensure a smooth transition?

Any advice, tools, or real-world experiences would be really helpful. Learn more

Thanks!

Hi  @Duprex Peptide , :)
Hope you are doing well,
Welcome to the community!!

Since Trello doesn't have a dedicated "Migration Assistant" like Jira or Confluence, here are some tips for handling this.

1. For a larger number of boards, you’ll likely want to use the Trello REST API to automate the process of creating cards and boards.

  • To import data into Trello, you can explore some power-ups that can handle this, as Trello does not support importing files to create cards natively.

2. Handling Power-Ups: Power-Ups won't migrate automatically. You’ll need to:

  • Check the Trello Power-Up Directory to ensure your essential ones are available in the cloud.

  • Manually re-enable and re-configure them on your new boards once the data is moved.

3. Risks

  • While card comments migrate well via API/tools, the "system" history usually starts fresh on the new board.
  • If your self-hosted setup uses local storage for files, you'll need to upload those to Trello cards.
