Template sharing with my paying customer

Lizanne van Esch

Hi there, I have created a board and make it a template (I have Trello premium). I am selling this template to my audience, so they can copy the board into their own workspace.

What I am seeing is:

  • paying customers can see who has bought it (privacy matter)
  • paying customer can edit my template (not what I want).

How can I:

  • Share my template where people can only make changes only once they have the copy in their own workspace
  • Avoid members can see who is a member
  • Avoid members to make changes

The board is set as a template (black ribbon above).

Visibility only to workspace (not public or private)

The rights are set to 'observer'

So, what am I doing wrong and how can I manage to share my bord after payment without people seeing each other and make edits to the template?

yeah that is a crazy one.

templates are for internal use. so within workspace.

if you want to sell. then you have to make it a public board, they copy this in their own workspace.
automations cannot be copied, so they have to create them all theirselves so you would have to give instructions.

after they copied the board, they can do whatever they want to do with it. no control left on duplicating etc.

Okay! But that is fine, after they copies it's out of my hand anyway.

If I have a public board, can people still see who has access to the public template? Which is a privacy matter, one of my buyers is not happy with that.

no they will not. they are not being added to the board. you are only sharing the link and then they get a note that they can copy the board to their workspace. check the boardsettings to block members etc

Unfortunately they will be a member of the board, no matter what settings I give. It's a bit confusing 😅 also because if you are selling templates it appears that buyers can only have access to one board, unless I pay for an extra seat (which I don't for these templates).

Visibility = public
Members are added als viewer (so they can not make changes to the board)

The bord is a template.

No you set to public. Then copy the link of the board and that you will send to the customer. You dont need to add members.

When they open the link then on top they see save board to workspace or something like that.

Yes I know but I don't add the members myself. It happens when I share the sharing link in my email funnel. If they click, they automatically become a board member... :(

that is weird. but you should not use the share button on the board. just the weblink in the browser.

if you use the hyperlink from the browser, share that, then give instructions:
when opening the link, go to settings and copy board to workspace.

has never been an issue to me

thank you @Femke Lucassen now I see what I did wrong all the time! 😅

It's the sharing button. I changed it and now it works perfectly, thanks!
