How do I stop my lists from automatically sorting every time I open the program?  I want certain lists to remain in the order I place them in.

You or someone on your board might have set up an automation rule for list sorting. You can disable that automation. More info https://support.atlassian.com/trello/docs/automation-overview/

Thank you!  I started a new board from scratch without any automations and the issue is resolved.
