Description:
The native layout feature where a user can double-click empty board background space to instantly trigger the "Add List" prompt has completely stopped working.
Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Open any Trello board on a desktop browser.
  2. Double-click an empty background area or space between existing lists.
  3. Observe that no "Add List" prompt or input field appears.
Troubleshooting Already Attempted (Cross-Platform/Cross-Browser):
To isolate the bug, I have thoroughly tested and confirmed the issue persists across all of the following:
  • Operating Systems: Tested on both Windows (Lenovo Thinkpad) and macOS (Macbook).
  • Browsers: Confirmed broken on both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
  • Isolation Steps: Cleared site cache and local data, tested fully in Incognito/Private windows, and completely disabled all browser extensions on Chrome on Macbook.
Because it fails across completely separate machines, OS environments, profiles, and browsers, this appears to be a recent platform-side regression bug. Please escalate to the development team to restore this critical power-user feature.

Heya @David W_ Jackman ! I gave this a test but haven't been able to replicate yet on my side. I'm using Chrome Version 152.0.7977.65 (Official Build) (arm64) on MacOS 26.6.1.

For me, when I double-click between lists, I'm prompted to enter a new list name, and add the list from there.

Are you still seeing this issue today, or have you seen improvement since you last posted?

Hi @David W_ Jackman , this does appear to be a Trello regression. Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Atlassian’s current board documentation still states that double-clicking between two lists should insert a new list. The broader Trello guidance also says that double-clicking free space should open the Add list pop-over, so this behavior has not been documented as removed.

You have already ruled out the normal local causes by reproducing it across Windows and macOS, multiple browsers, private sessions, cleared site data, and disabled extensions. As a temporary workaround, use Add another list at the right edge of the board, then drag the new list into position.

The information you provided is sufficient for Atlassian to investigate this as a possible regression. Keep a short screen recording and the approximate date it stopped working available, but do not post private board URLs or account details in this public thread.
