Problems synching my apps

I have used Trello on both my MacBook and iPad for some years, but not recently. While I was using them I could switch from one device to the other and everything was synched across.

I recently had a notification on my MacBook to say I hadn't used Trello for a while and it needed updating. I did update it. but I have realised I used a different email address to the iPad account. So now they won't synch.

I tried changing the address on the iPad account but it won't accept the change because the 'new' email is already in use. I have also tried deleting the app on my iPad, and re-installing it, but it just went straight back to the old account.

I want to be able to use all my boards on both devices. How do I get them to talk to one another again?

Hi @Alison, welcome to the community! 👋

What you're running into isn't really a sync glitch. You now have two separate Trello accounts, one tied to each email address. Trello only keeps boards in sync across devices within a single account, so while your MacBook and iPad are signed in to different emails, each device shows its own set of boards and they can't see one another.

That also explains the two things you already tried:

  • The email change was rejected because that address already belongs to the other account, and Trello won't move an email that's in use elsewhere.
  • Deleting and reinstalling the iPad app doesn't switch accounts. The app just signs back into the same one. To change it, open Trello on the iPad, go to your account menu and log out from inside the app, then sign in with the other email.

To get all your boards back together, the cleanest route is to consolidate everything under the one account you want to keep:

  • Decide which account (which email) will be your main one going forward.
  • Log in to the account you want to stop using. On each board, invite your main account and set it as an admin, and invite it to each Workspace too. If you have a lot of boards, use the board transfer tool instead of doing them one by one.
  • Once everything is shared or transferred, sign in to that single account on both devices. From then on every board will sync across the MacBook and iPad, just like before.

Full step by step here: Merging and splitting multiple Trello accounts.

If you'd rather keep both accounts and switch between them, Trello also has an account switcher (mainly in the browser) so you can toggle without logging out each time: Switching between Trello accounts. For your goal of having all boards on both devices, though, putting them under one account is the simpler fix.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you, that has solved it! I'm not bothered about the old boards on the other account because they are rather out of date. Thanks for your help.
