How can i update my main board that I share without resetting the persons checklist

Im new to trello.  I set up a main/template board for onboarding that I copy and name the board to the individual so they can checkout their completed items.  

How can i update the main board and share to everyone without messing up their "done" "checkedoff" items?

@Mechelle Miller If you want to update what items appear in each of their individual boards, you could for example create a list in the main board, then copy that list and move the copy to each person's board.
