Help with reminder eMails please. If I ask for a reminder one day prior then I never get an eMail.

If I ask for a reminder on the due date then I always get an email, but if I ask for it to be sent one day prior, then I never get an eMail.  Please can you tell me what other settings that I need to change in order to get a reminder eMail one day prior to the due date?
