Bullet Numbering Behavior

When creating a bullet list, I want to start a new Parent bullet by hitting return twice, but instead of creating the new Parent bullet, it continues creating Child bullets for infinity and the list cannot be stopped. I can delete all the bullets and go right to the end of the last Child bullet but no matter how many blanks I leave, it will not automatically create the next Parent bullet point.

I suspect this has to do with copy/pasting text and trying to apply the bulleting format afterwards. To break the list, I have to stop the formatting, delete everything below the point where the problem occurs, then paste. Or, I can manually type all the information which is a bit unproductive.

I've tried different combinations of the return key but nothing works until I just delete the text but I feel like I'm missing the real keystroke. Any other suggestions?

Below are examples:

1. Parent A
     a. Child A-1
     b. Child A-2
2. Parent B
     a. Child B-1
     b. Child B-2

But instead, this happens:

1. Parent A
     a. Child A-1
     b. Child A-2
     c.
     d.
     e.
     f.
     g. Parent B

@Drafting Account

Assuming you're on the web version with a keyboard.

Use Shift-Tab. It's quick and works in most applications, including Trello. This is great because it's pretty much standard in all typing applications.

In totality:

  • When you want the next line to continue to the next item on the list, press Enter
  • When you want to the next line to be a child, press Enter and then press Tab
  • When you want the next line to be a parent, press Enter and then press Shift-Tab
    • Note: If you use Shift-Tab on the top parent, then it will end the list (which convenient and makes sense)

I just tested this in the web browser and it worked.

As @DiMaggio Tucci mentions below, I should have said

To do indents for either bullets or numbers use Tav

To remove indents, use shift + tab

The above example shows you can also mix and match numbers and bullets with Tab and Shit + Tab
