Besides wedding and office party planning, why are there no templates for other party events?

Why are there no templates available for parties such as birthdays or barbecues? There are only templates for weddings and office parties.

Hi @Connie Carlson

Gladly, this is a Sunday special vibe

But... Who needs a boring corporate template when you’ve got a killer theme and creativity?

Themes are the real secret weapon. Instead of a rigid event-planning template, you just need a strong theme to act as your invisible scaffold. A theme instantly decides your food, music, invitations, and dress code without making your party feel like a corporate board meeting.

It feels like weddings and office parties get all the love, right? The real reason comes down to structure vs. chaos:

  • Weddings & Corporate Events: These follow rigid, predictable rules. There’s a seating chart, vendor contracts, tight agendas, and RSVPs that dictate every dollar spent. Software developers love predictable formulas, so they build rigid templates for them.
  • Birthdays & Barbecues: These are pure social anarchy! A barbecue doesn't care about a 12-step timeline, it cares about good music, drinks, and who’s bringing the extra bag of ice. Because informal parties flow organically, rigid software templates often get in the way.

Example themes:

  • Decade Time-Travel Birthday/Wedding: Pick an ultra-specific year (e.g., 1980 Retro/Pop Culture) for instant music, outfit, and nostalgia wins. Instead of a generic wedding timeline, a nostalgic theme turns your reception into an immersive time machine, blending deep sentimentality with pure fun.
  • Colour-Coded Potluck: Assign every guest or group a specific colour: their clothes, drinks, and food contribution must all match that shade.

Trello boards are essentially visual theme engines. Instead of forcing party into a rigid calendar template, it can turn a theme into a dynamic, card-based party planner.

Here is how to structure a Trello board using themes as the blueprint:

List Name Card Examples How It Works
Theme & Vibe Moodboard/Colour Palette,  Playlist Ideas, Dress Code Rules Keeps the visual inspiration in one spot so every decision matches the theme.
Menu & Drinks Main Dish (e.g., rice, burgers, breads), Guest Contributions, Ice & Drink Checklist Assign cards to guests to track who is bringing what.
Shopping & Gear Projector, Bed Sheet (Movie Night) • String Lights, Seating, Paper Goods Track what you own vs. what needs to be bought or borrowed.
Party Day Flow 4PM: Grill Setup & Music, 6PM: Food Served, 8PM: Movie / Activity A loose, low-stress timeline just to keep the host on track without feeling rigid.

Trello is a bit of blank canvas but your use case is one that I'm sure many people have used it for. The issue is that the template gallery has been closed for new submissions for a long time and is a bit stale.

Have you tried Trello's AI board builder feature. This could give you the inspiration you're looking for.
