Hello,
Our Trello account and associated Boards were set up by someone who no longer works at our organisation. I am keen to remove their name from the Board but don't want to negatively impact on the board set up by removing them. I think I am now the account and Board admin but I'm not 100% sure so don't want to remove them as a guest - are you able to help?
Hi there,
It is a very common concern, but I have good news: Removing a member from a Trello board does NOT delete the content they created. All their cards, comments, and attachments will remain exactly where they are. The only thing that changes is that their name/avatar will no longer be listed as a member of the board.
Before you remove them, here is a quick "Safety Checklist" to ensure you have full control:
Verify Your Admin Status:
Open the board and look at the members list (top right).
Find your avatar. If there is a small blue/chevron icon on your avatar, you are an Admin. If not, you are just a member.
Note: Only an Admin can remove another Admin.
Check Workspace Settings:
Go to your Workspace settings and check the "Members" tab. Ensure you are a Workspace Admin there as well. This gives you the power to manage all boards within that workspace.
The Removal Process:
Once you've confirmed you are an Admin, click on the former employee’s avatar in the board members list.
Select "Remove from Board."
Again, don't worry: their history (comments, edits) stays. Their name will simply show up as "Deactivated User" or just their name without an active link if their whole Atlassian account is eventually deleted.
Ownership of the Workspace:
If the former employee is the only Workspace Admin, you might need to "Grant Admin" status to yourself before removing them. If you can see the "Workspace Settings" menu, you likely already have the necessary permissions.
Pro Tip: If you are unsure, try adding a new "Test" account (like a personal email) to the board, make it an admin, and practice removing it first. This will give you the confidence that no data is lost!
I hope this helps you clean up your Trello environment safely!
