Hi there, 

The notifications on your desktop are handled by your OS. If you're using a MAC you can find the Notification section inside the settings, there you'll see the Trello app where you can allow notifications on the desktop.

You can avoid email notifications by selecting the option never on https://trello.com/your/account.
