Hey Startups Community! Adam here from the Atlassian for Startups team πŸ‘‹

In our latest episode of Startup Stories with Atlassian, I sat down with an Atlassian for Startups customer Stan Suchkov, Founder and CEO of Evolve, for a conversation about pivoting (the word founders say with a wince) and why Stan thinks the stigma around it is costing founders more than the pivot itself ever would.

Pivot Early, Pivot Often

For a stretch of Evolve's early life, the team was changing direction every six months. At one point, they'd already raised a seed round, pivoted anyway, and returning to investors with a new direction.

His core advice? Actively go looking for negative feedback. Don't just collect the voices that validate you. Repeated signals that something isn't working are your most valuable data points – and in today's AI-driven environment, Stan feels confident that three months is all you need before you reassess.

What Investors Are Actually Watching

Stan shared a story from his time at 500 Global that reframed things for me: an investor recommended a founder's acceptance into the program specifically because that founder had demonstrated the discipline to change course over two years of building. The pivot wasn't a red flag. It was a confidence signal.

Your Team Doesn't Have to Leave

Through two and a half to three years of major pivots, Stan's core team never had a single departure. He credits one thing above all: bringing the team into the conversation before the decision was made, not after. People don't leave because direction changes, they leave when change happens to them instead of with them.

The Real Blocker: Ego

Stan was direct about this. Founder ego is the reason most pivots happen too late. He's watched founders in rooms dismiss advisor feedback from people who've seen hundreds of startups succeed and fail. His analogy: you wouldn't tell your doctor you know better. Your advisors are specialists. Listen to them.

The Best Pivots Level Up, They Don't Start Over

I asked Stan to finish a sentence: "The best pivots are about..." His answer: doing more and fixing real mistakes. A pivot isn't an escape hatch. The founders who use it that way tend to find the same problems waiting for them on the other side.

Watch the full 12-minute interview with Stan below – it's worth every minute.
