A Sandbox Is Your Best Friend (Here's Why)

So, what is a sandbox?

A sandbox is a safe, separate copy of your Atlassian environment where you can experiment. Try a new workflow, test an automation, or make a change to your configuration - all without disturbing the production setup your team relies on every day.

Think of it as your team’s practice stage: low stakes, lots of room to play, and no audience waiting for a flawless performance.

What would you use a sandbox for?

Pretty much anything you’d rather test before unleashing it on the whole team. For example:

  • Try new Jira workflows, fields, screens, and permissions.

  • Test automation rules before they start updating real work.

  • Build and refine project templates.

  • Train new teammates in a realistic environment.

  • Prototype a process, gather feedback, and iterate quickly.

The big win? You can be curious - and occasionally gloriously wrong - without creating a production fire drill.

Good news for Atlassian for Startups teams

If you’re part of Atlassian for Startups, your Premium benefits include one sandbox at no extra cost. That means your startup gets room to experiment, learn, and improve without adding another line item to the budget. We love a good freebie - especially one that helps you ship with confidence.

Coming soon: promote changes from sandbox to production

We’re also opening the beta for promoting changes from a sandbox to production. Instead of rebuilding a successful experiment by hand, you’ll be able to move tested changes forward with a smoother path from “works in my sandbox” to “works for everyone.”

Ready to experiment?

Give your ideas a safe place to stretch their legs. Use your sandbox to test, tweak, and learn before making changes live. Your future self - and your production environment - will thank you.
