Is SourceTree Any Good Now?

No, this isn't a troll but a genuine question.

For years up to 2017 it was a great tool, working seamlessly in most cases with many repo types. But from there it seemed to go downhill, with inexplicable bugs, random crashes creeping in (many of which seemed to relate to file locking) or random bugs where some features would crash the client as here: (e.g. https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Sourcetree-questions/Repository-does-not-exist-after-3-3-9-Update/qaq-p/1463513#M39502)

After many years of avoiding it, I'm seriously considering using it again.

Can anyone give me the summary after many years, is it any good? Has it become any less buggy? (the reason I stopped using it)

Hi @thefraj

Apologies for the wait. Three years and three months for a first reply is not a record I want this forum to keep, though, in fairness, your question was about long-term stability, so maybe this thread was just gathering longitudinal data.

To the actual question, yes, Sourcetree is still alive and still shipping. Windows is on 3.4.30 (March 2026) and macOS on 4.2.16 (March 2026), so the "is it abandonware" fear from 2023 does not hold up.

On the crashes and file locking that drove you away, most of that class of problem is gone. In my experience, what remains is performance rather than stability, and it usually comes down to configuration. I would:

  • ...use system Git, not the embedded one
  • ...keep the bookmarks sidebar small, not 40 repos
  • ...kaise or disable the auto-fetch interval on large repos

Cheers, Martin
